Spinal Manipulation

Spinal Adjustment May Be Just What You Need in New York City

The thing about living and working here in New York City is that even though we have an extensive public transportation system, it still involves climbing and descending subway steps or walking from the bus to our destinations. This is great in that it gives us exercise, but it can also take a toll on our knees and backs in the process. Many of our fellow New Yorkers rely on spinal manipulation to keep them mobile and pain free. Our practice, Balance in Motion, and our chiropractor, Dr. Danny Choi, DC make this convenient with three offices, one in Midtown and two more in Queens.

Spinal Manipulation? What Does That Mean?

A spinal manipulation, or spinal adjustment as the treatment is also known, is a hands-on pain relief technique performed by chiropractors who use it to treat back and neck pain, a variety of painful musculoskeletal disorders, and to restore mobility and function to any misaligned joints. Since all of these disorders can be traced back to a misalignment of vertebrae somewhere along the spinal column, restoring the spine to its original integrity is the answer to treating various other seemingly unrelated conditions. Spinal adjustments involve applying a quick shallow force to the area of the spine that is misaligned or dislocated. The purpose of the thrust is to move the affected joint slightly beyond its normal range, and in so doing, release any air that may be adversely affecting the fluid that lubricates the joint and impeding its normal alignment.

How Does a Chiropractor Determine Where a Subluxation is Located?

During your initial visit to a chiropractor, he will give you a complete orthopedic and medical examination as well as take your medical history. After listening to your description of your pain and where specifically you feel it, he will then seek to determine where along your spinal column the misaligned vertebrae at the root of your pain are located. Because these out of place spinal joints may be resting on nerves that are causing your pain, restoring those joints to their normal position will alleviate your pain. To find the specific spinal joints responsible for your pain, your chiropractor may either prescribe a series of x-rays or use a temperature measuring device to locate any areas of the spinal column that deviate significantly from the majority of the segments along the spine.
